Texas program

CHIP Perinatal (a pregnancy at home)

Care for a pregnancy and newborn when the pregnant person has no other coverage.

What it is

Care for a pregnancy and newborn when the pregnant person has no other coverage.

CHIP Perinatal helps with prenatal visits, delivery and newborn care. It is a separate application question from your older child’s cancer coverage. Household income and pregnancy coverage must fit.

Eligibility rules
  • The pregnancy must lack other coverage. The March 1, 2026 income limit for four is $5,555 a month, or 202% of poverty.
  • Citizenship or immigration status is not required under handbook D-410. Someone who could receive Medicaid but fails to verify status is not placed into CHIP Perinatal.
What you get
  • No fee to join.
  • Prenatal visits, delivery and newborn care within the program’s limits.
What the help covers
  • The benefit concerns the unborn child, with prenatal, delivery and newborn benefits. It does not cover an older child’s leukemia.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the prenatal enrollment team to review the pregnancy through Your Texas Benefits.
  2. Have the due date, household income and insurance information ready.

Your Texas Benefits · Official page ↗

After you apply
  • Handbook D-230 gives a decision deadline of the 15th working day after the file date for Form TF0001.
  • The prenatal team can explain the assigned plan and which delivery services it covers.
Good to know

This is not full health insurance for the pregnant adult.

Other details
  • Pregnancy Medicaid is tested first. The enrollment notice matters because the two programs cover different care.
Ask your social worker

“Could the prenatal team check which pregnancy coverage fits, explain its limits, and help with the application?”

Why I’m asking: I want the pregnancy reviewed separately so we understand whose care this would cover.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Report the pregnancy, due date, income and insurance on the Your Texas Benefits application.

Your social worker

Connects the pregnant family member to the prenatal enrollment team, separately from the child's case.

The care team

The prenatal clinician, not the oncologist, supplies pregnancy records.

Who decides
HHSC and the assigned CHIP perinatal plan
Ask your social worker
“Can the prenatal enrollment team review the pregnant family member separately from my child's application?”

How to apply

First step: Apply at YourTexasBenefits.com or 877-541-7905 and ask for CHIP perinatal by name.

What to gather

  • Due date
  • Household income
  • Insurance details

How long: HHSC must send its decision (Form TF0001) by the 15th working day after the file date for a pregnancy application. Do not delay prenatal care while waiting.

What a yes looks like

An approved perinatal plan covering the defined pregnancy package with no family fee.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Ask HHSC to test pregnancy Medicaid and the emergency branch. The child with leukemia needs a separate decision.

Watch out

  • Not comprehensive insurance for the pregnant adult.
  • Pregnancy Medicaid is tested first. Ask which one you were placed in.
  • Immigration status is not a bar. A pregnant woman who could get Medicaid but does not send proof of citizenship or status is not placed in CHIP perinatal, so answer the status question either way.

If they say no, quote this: Texas Works Handbook D-410: a pregnant woman does not have to meet the citizenship or alien-status requirements for CHIP perinatal.
