Help keeping child care for a sibling

Texas Child Care Services can help pay for a sibling’s care when household and work rules fit.

What it is

Texas Child Care Services can help pay for a sibling’s care when household and work rules fit.

Treatment can unsettle the child care that keeps a sibling's day steady. Your local Workforce Solutions office pays part of the cost while a parent works or studies and income is under its line. A family already getting help asks about keeping it during medical leave; a parent who has stopped work cannot start it new.

Who this can help
  • The local office checks income and activity requirements. The October 2025–September 2026 table lists $6,443 a month for three and $7,670 for four. The office confirms the table for your care period. Income alone does not guarantee help.
  • If you already get child-care help, it usually continues while you take leave to care for your child. Starting help for the first time needs a parent who is working or training, unless the local office has its own caregiver exception.
  • For care beginning in October 2026 or later, the local workforce office can show the income ceiling and parent-share table effective for that period. The family-of-four figure for October 2025–September 2026 should not be used as the limit for a later contract year.
What you get
  • Help paying for approved child care when eligibility and funding fit.
  • A review of whether existing child-care help can continue during a work change.
What the rules cover
  • For October 2025–September 2026, the published family-of-four table lists a $7,670 monthly income ceiling and a $537 maximum monthly parent share. That maximum is based on the table’s income ceiling, not a promise that every family pays 7% of its own income. The local office calculates the actual charge, reductions or exemptions using the table and rules effective for the care period.
  • Assistance depends on available funding. Meeting the income ceiling does not promise an immediate place.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your local Workforce Solutions office how medical leave would affect existing care or a new application.
  2. Have your benefit notice, income information and documents explaining the leave and care need ready.
  3. Ask the office for the approved schedule, family charge and any waiting-list information in writing.

What happens next
  • Written approval should explain the care covered, family charge and any conditions during leave.
  • The office can explain a denial and the review route. A social worker can help document why the family’s work and care schedule changed.
Good to know

Being at the hospital does not count as work. Funding is limited and there can be a local waiting list.

Other details
  • A local caregiver exception for a new applicant is separate from an existing recipient’s protected temporary leave. The workforce office can confirm any current local exception and its documents.
Ask your social worker

“Could we keep help with our other child’s care during medical leave, or qualify for it now, and can you help us check the local rules and cost?”

Why I’m asking: I want our other child to have reliable care while treatment changes our schedule.
