What it is

Monthly grocery money on a Lone Star Card when household income and savings fit.

SNAP can help when treatment reduces household pay. HHSC first screens income, then subtracts allowed costs to calculate the amount. Rent, utilities and qualifying medical expenses can affect the budget.

Eligibility rules
  • Texas generally limits countable resources to $5,000, after ownership and exclusions are checked. The highest-counted vehicle has a $22,500 exemption; other vehicles have an $8,700 exemption, with additional exclusions.
  • For October 2025–September 2026, the four-person gross line is $3,483 a month at 130% of poverty. The higher 165% screen is $4,421. Net-income rules still apply.

  • Faster processing when income and cash are very low.
What the help covers
  • For October 2025–September 2026, the maximum for four is $994 a month. The actual amount falls as net income rises.
  • For an SSI or qualifying disabled household member, verified medical expenses above $35 can allow the $135 standard deduction. Above $170, actual costs minus $35 can be deducted.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your social worker for help with the SNAP application at Your Texas Benefits.
  2. Have ready: current pay stubs, rent or mortgage costs, utility bills and bank balances.
  3. Include an SSI letter and unreimbursed medical receipts if someone qualifies for the medical deduction.

After you apply
  • Ordinary processing takes up to 30 days. Qualifying expedited households must have access within seven days; Texas uses faster same- or next-workday processing steps when the case meets those rules.
  • The notice gives the monthly amount and certification period. The card arrives by mail.
Good to know

Your child's cancer alone does not open the medical deduction; SSI does.

  • A pay drop can change an existing award. HHSC’s budget shows the household members, income and deductions used.
  • For October 1, 2026–September 30, 2027, a four-person household’s ordinary gross screen is $3,575 a month and Texas’s higher initial screen is $4,538; the net-income standard is $2,750. The maximum benefit is $1,023 before the income calculation. The earlier $3,483/$4,421 screens and $994 maximum apply only through September 30, 2026.

Watch out

  • Texas has a higher initial income limit of $4,421 a month for four. HHSC still subtracts allowed costs to calculate the benefit.
  • Texas counts savings above $5,000 (one car up to $22,500 is excluded).
  • Medical deductions need an SSI or disabled household member. A diagnosis alone is not enough.
