Texas program

Food and formula for pregnancy and young children (Texas WIC)

Food, formula and nutrition support during pregnancy, after birth and for children under 5.

What it is

Food, formula and nutrition support during pregnancy, after birth and for children under 5.

Texas WIC has an income test and a clinic assessment. Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish the income requirement. The person receiving WIC must also fit its age or pregnancy rules.

Eligibility rules
  • Eligible participants include pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding parents, infants and children under 5.
  • For July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027, the income standard is 185% of poverty: $4,212 monthly for three or $5,088 for four. Qualifying benefit participation can meet the income requirement.
What you get
  • Food packages with fruit and vegetables, milk, cereal and other approved foods.
  • Formula and nutrition or breastfeeding support.
What the help covers
  • Through September 30, 2026, monthly fruit-and-vegetable amounts are $26 for a child, $48 for a pregnant or postpartum participant and $52 for a breastfeeding participant, plus the rest of the food package.
  • Special formula questions go to the WIC clinic with the child’s dietary information.
  • From April 1, 2026, choosing extra fruit and vegetables instead of juice adds $3. The corresponding amounts are $29 for children, $51 for the lower adult category and $55 for the higher breastfeeding category. The clinic confirms the amount for each benefit month.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask a Texas WIC clinic for an appointment through texaswic.org/apply or 800-942-3678.
  2. Have ID, address, pregnancy or child-age information, and income records or a Medicaid, SNAP or TANF letter ready.

texaswic.org/apply or 800-942-3678 · Official page ↗

After you apply
  • The clinic sets the appointment and completes its assessment. An approval loads the assigned food package onto a WIC card.
Good to know

A child’s WIC benefit ends at the fifth birthday. A younger sibling may qualify separately.

Other details
  • U.S. citizenship is not required for Texas WIC. The clinic still checks who in the family qualifies and which food package applies. Your social worker or WIC clinic can confirm the fruit-and-vegetable amount for the benefit month, including the option to receive extra fruit and vegetables instead of juice.
Ask your social worker

“Could WIC help anyone in our household, and would it cover the food or formula they need? Could you help us connect with a clinic?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand food help for each eligible family member, including a younger sibling.

Who does what

You

Your social worker

Connects the family to WIC for a younger sibling or a pregnant or postpartum parent.

The care team

Provides dietary information if the clinic asks about a special formula.

Who decides
The Texas WIC clinic
Ask your social worker
“Can you connect us with WIC for the younger child or the pregnant family member?”
