What it is
A temporary disability parking placard can make the walk from the car shorter.
Long walks through a parking lot can be difficult during treatment. A clinician decides whether your child meets the certification requirements. The placard is temporary rather than an automatic benefit of diagnosis.
Eligibility rules
- A physician, physician assistant, physical therapist or nurse practitioner can sign the certification.
- TC-842 requires a qualifying functional limitation, such as being unable to walk 200 feet without resting, needing another person or a device to walk, severe specified lung or heart limitations, portable oxygen, or severely limited walking from an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition. A physician, physician assistant, physical therapist or nurse practitioner certifies it. A temporary placard lasts at most six months; the social worker can help ask DMV what new paperwork is needed if the limitation continues.

What the help includes
- The July 2026 TC-842 form lists a free paper placard and a $2.50 durable placard. A placard does not guarantee free parking at every facility.
If you decide to apply
- Bring form TC-842 to a clinic visit and ask whether your child meets the certification criteria.
- If you choose a placard and the clinician certifies eligibility, ask the social worker about TC-842’s identification and submission requirements. A child does not need a driver’s license.

Good to know
DMV confirms what new paperwork is needed if the limitation continues beyond the temporary placard.
