What it is

WIC is for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents, each checked separately. Income at or under 185% of the poverty line qualifies, and taking part in Medicaid, SNAP or TANF can simplify the income check; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs at an appointment.
Eligibility rules
- Under 5, or pregnant or recently pregnant; each person is checked separately.
- The usual income guideline is 185% of poverty. Established eligibility in a qualifying benefit can meet the income test under the applicant and family-member rules below.
- U.S. citizenship or a qualifying immigration status is not required for Virginia WIC. The clinic still checks residence, the person's age or pregnancy category, nutrition needs and income eligibility.
- From June 29, 2026 through June 30, 2027, Virginia WIC’s income guideline for three people is $4,212 monthly or $50,542 annually. For four, the monthly figure is $5,088.
- An applicant’s established Medicaid, SNAP or TANF eligibility can meet the income test. The WIC manual allows specified family-member extensions; a pending application or any benefit received by someone at home does not automatically qualify everyone. FAMIS is not automatically the Medicaid income route.

What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
The clinic can assess income directly while another application is pending. Established benefit eligibility can simplify that test; it does not replace the other WIC requirements.
