What it is

TANF provides a small cash grant to qualifying families with children and very little income.

TANF is cash when earnings have nearly stopped; the entry line sits far below the food-help line and the grant depends on your locality. A relative raising the child gets a child-only grant. A parent whose continuous presence at home is essential to a disabled family member can be excused from the work rules.

Eligibility rules
  • The local benefits office confirms the current entry limit and grant for your locality. TANF has no resource test. A relative requesting a child-only grant generally has their own income left out of that grant. The office still checks the child’s income, relationships and other rules. SNAP’s income screen is not a TANF eligibility test.
  • The caregiver exemption concerns a sole carer whose substantially continuous presence is essential to a disabled or incapacitated household member.

Good to know

Being at the hospital does not by itself excuse you from the work rules; the exemption is for a parent whose continuous care at home is essential.

Other details
  • The work-activity route generally allows 24 months followed by 24 months without assistance, subject to exceptions. A separate 60-month clock also applies.
  • Diversion is a one-time payment of at least $1,500 (or four months of TANF, if more) for a specific need, once in 12 months. Taking it means you cannot get monthly TANF for up to six months afterward, so ask the office how long before you choose.
