What it is

A temporary parking placard helps a child whose mobility makes the walk from the car difficult.

Treatment can make walking harder even when the difficulty is temporary. Eligibility depends on mobility, not the cancer diagnosis alone. The clinician certifies whether your child meets the criteria.

Eligibility rules
  • A medical doctor, osteopathic doctor, chiropractor, advanced nurse practitioner or physician assistant can certify the mobility criteria.
What you get
  • A temporary parking placard valid for up to six months.
  • Access to designated parking when transporting the child who qualifies.
What the protection covers
  • A parent or legal guardian may sign for a child who cannot sign. The temporary placard is based on the child’s functional limitation.
  • The temporary placard is free; a replacement for a lost one costs $5. Renewal needs a new medical certification.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the clinic to review the mobility criteria on form DMV-41-TR.
  2. Have an eligible clinician complete the certification, then sign for your child if needed.
  3. If you decide to request the placard, your social worker can help confirm where the completed form goes and what to expect.

Good to know

One criterion is being unable to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest. A diagnosis by itself does not establish that limit.
