What it is

West Virginia Medicaid covers adults with low income, including parents caring for a child.

A pay cut can change your own health coverage options as well as your child’s. Adult Medicaid uses current monthly income. The state checks your household and income separately from your child’s eligibility.

Eligibility rules
  • You must live in West Virginia and be ages 19–64. The income standard is 138% of poverty including the five-point allowance.
  • The line is about $2,489 a month for two people, $3,142 for three and $3,795 for four.
What you get
  • Health coverage with no monthly premium.
  • Doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions and mental health care.
What the coverage means
  • Your own medical care has separate coverage from your child’s. The family application can include both of you.

  1. Ask the hospital’s financial counselor to include you in the WV PATH healthcare application.
  2. Have your current income ready and explain when pay changed.

Good to know

Your savings do not block this adult Medicaid route. Last year’s earnings may not describe the month you are applying.

Other details
  • From 2027, most adults on this coverage must meet work rules. A parent caring for a child under 14 or a disabled person is excused; if the office cannot confirm that from its records, it sends you a letter with a deadline, so keep your address current.

First step: Add yourself on wvpath.wv.gov when you file for your child.

  1. Add yourself to the application you file for your child.
  2. If your pay has just dropped, report this month's figure, not last year's.
  3. Review any DoHS request with your social worker; an extra caregiving-exclusion report is not automatically required from everyone.

2027-01-01: From January 1, 2027 adults in this group face a work rule. A parent or caregiver of a child under 14, or of a disabled person of any age, is excluded, but the exclusion has to be reported.
