SNAP puts grocery money on a card each month for households that meet its rules.

A drop in pay can open food help. The office checks this month's income against the line, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. If someone at home is disabled, medical costs come off too.

Eligibility rules
  • Expedited rules include gross monthly income below $150 with liquid resources of $100 or less. Another route compares rent and utilities with income plus resources.
  • Most West Virginia households are screened at 200% of poverty, about $4,442 a month for three people. A household with a member who is 60 or older or receives a disability benefit is judged on income after deductions instead.
  • Most households have no savings test. Where one applies, the home and a car used for a disabled family member do not count.

What the help includes
  • For an elderly or qualifying disabled household member, medical expenses above $35 monthly can be deducted. A child receiving SSI can meet the disability category.

  2. Have current pay stubs, bank balances, rent or mortgage costs and utility costs ready.
  3. Explain any pay change and ask whether the expedited rules fit your household.

After you ask
  • An approval includes a monthly benefit amount and an EBT card.
  • Eligible households normally must be able to use benefits within 30 days after filing, or within seven calendar days under the expedited rules. Filing starts when the office receives a signed application with your name and address; if approved, the first month’s benefit is generally based on that filing date rather than the approval date. Your social worker can help check any delay or missing information.

  3. If a parent's pay has already dropped, report the new figure so the amount is worked out on it.

Watch out

  • Ask for expedited processing by name if income and savings are almost nothing.
  • Report a pay drop within days: the amount is recalculated on the new figure.
  • West Virginia's table is published as a reporting guide, so treat the figures as the state's published lines and let the office do the sum.
