What it is

WV WORKS is cash assistance for families with very low income and limited savings.

Monthly cash helps when earnings are very low. West Virginia uses a Standard of Need rather than a share of the poverty line, and savings have to be under $2,000. A parent caring for a disabled family member at home can be excused from the work requirement with a letter from the oncology team.

Eligibility rules
  • The asset limit is $2,000. Eligibility uses 100% of the Standard of Need, not 100% of poverty.
  • A parent providing medically necessary care to a disabled family member at home is exempt from the work requirement. Grandparents and other nonparental caretakers also have an exemption.
  • The savings limit is $2,000. The worker compares the family's counted income with the Standard of Need and can also set up a child-only case for a relative raising the child.

  • Monthly cash assistance when your family qualifies.
  • A one-time diversion payment worth up to three months of cash assistance instead of ongoing payments.
  • Separate Emergency Assistance for one 30-day period in twelve months.
What the help includes
  • A worker can compare ongoing cash assistance with diversion of up to three months’ assistance for an eligible short-term need. Before you choose diversion, the worker confirms repayment rules and when you could return to ongoing assistance.

SSI payments do not count as income for this program. The family’s savings still matter.

  3. Say at the interview that you are caring for a seriously ill child, or that you are the grandparent raising them.
