One-time help with a housing or energy crisis (Emergency Assistance)

A payment for eligible families facing a housing or energy crisis.

What it is

A payment for eligible families facing a housing or energy crisis.

A housing or energy emergency can arrive alongside treatment costs. Emergency Assistance can help eligible families with a qualifying crisis. It requires a new application for each payment.

Eligibility rules
  • A family must include a child under 18 and meet the 115%-of-poverty income screen and asset rules. Qualifying crises can involve homelessness or threatened homelessness, domestic violence, disaster or an energy emergency.
What you get
  • A one-time payment toward a qualifying crisis.
  • Up to $750 for an energy crisis.
If you decide to apply
  1. Your social worker can help you decide whether to talk with the local agency about the specific housing or energy crisis.
  2. Have your income information and the notice or bill showing the crisis ready.

Good to know

The agency decides whether the crisis qualifies and which payment limit applies. A general-payment ceiling and an energy-crisis ceiling do not automatically add together.

Other details
  • The general maximum is $1,200 for two to five people, or $220 per person for six or more. The $750 energy-crisis ceiling cannot be added automatically; the agency decides which rules apply.
  • A fresh application is required for another eligible payment after the twelve-month interval.
  • The agency must confirm a qualifying crisis, who belongs in the family, countable income and assets, who would receive payment and the decision timetable. DCF lists up to $1,200 for two to five people, or $220 per person in a larger family, and a $750 energy-crisis ceiling. These are ceilings, not promised payments, and they should not be added together without the agency checking the rules. Your social worker can help explain the crisis and any urgent deadline.
  • A challenged decision has a 45-day fact-finding request period. This is not the initial payment-processing deadline; the agency confirms that timetable and your notice’s date.
Ask your social worker

“If we face a housing or energy crisis, could Emergency Assistance help, what limits apply, and would you help us request it if appropriate?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand what help exists before a household bill becomes another emergency.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply as soon as the crisis is in sight, not after it lands.

Your social worker

The social worker can write a letter describing the loss of income.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The local agency.
Ask your social worker
“We are close to not making the rent. Can we apply for Emergency Assistance, and can you write something about the loss of income?”

How to apply

First step: Ring the local agency and ask for Emergency Assistance as soon as a crisis is in sight.

  1. Ask the local agency about Emergency Assistance the week a crisis becomes likely.

Where it starts: Ask the local agency for Emergency Assistance as soon as a crisis is in sight.

What to gather

  • The notice or bill that is due
  • This month's income
  • Your address and household list

How long: No published timescale; ask the agency.

What a yes looks like

A one-off payment towards the rent or the energy bill.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Over the income line, or a payment already made in the last twelve months.

Watch out

  • Only once in twelve months, so save it for the crisis that matters.
  • You have to apply again each time; it does not roll on.
  • The state did not publish the 2026 income figures for each household size.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

General payment ceiling: $1,200 for two through five people, or $220 per person for six or more. Energy-crisis ceiling: $750. The agency confirms interactions; the ceilings are not automatically additive.

  • $1,200 — General maximum payment, groups of two to five people
  • $220 — General maximum per person, groups of six or more
  • $750 — Energy crisis maximum payment
  • $12 — Months between payments

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
Income ceiling is 115% of poverty. The review did not verify official rounded 2026 monthly cells; agency household and rounding rules govern the application.
Frequency
once every twelve months, reapplication required
Crisis
Family with a child under 18 facing a qualifying homelessness or threatened-homelessness, domestic-violence, disaster or energy emergency; income and asset rules apply.

The trap: It can only be paid once every twelve months and you have to apply again each time, so do not use it on the first small shortfall if a bigger one is coming.
