Wisconsin program
Income after work ends or hours fall (unemployment insurance)
Wisconsin unemployment can replace some earnings when its work and separation rules are met.
What it is
Wisconsin unemployment can replace some earnings when its work and separation rules are met.
Each week you claim you still have to be able to take a job, which is hard while your child needs you at home.
Eligibility rules
- The rule covers a quit where a close family member's health left you no other reasonable choice.
- The total is capped at 26 weekly payments, or 40% of your past wages if that is less. The first week is unpaid.
What you get
- $54 to $370 weekly when eligible.
- Possible partial benefits when an employer reduces hours.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the state unemployment program how the family-health quit exception or reduced-hours rules fit your situation.
- Have work and wage records, leave requests and documentation of the caring demands ready.

Good to know
Even when Wisconsin accepts why you left, it pays only for weeks you could take a job. Full-time bedside care usually rules a week out.
Other details
- Employer leave can have different consequences for your job and health insurance than resignation. HR can explain available leave before a separation decision.
- To use the family-illness exception you need proof of the illness and proof that the employer would not give enough leave. If hours are cut, the first $30 a week is ignored and two-thirds of the rest reduces the payment; working 32 hours or earning over $500 in a week stops it.
- You must make four work-search actions a week and register with the job center within 14 days unless excused. Each weekly claim is due within 14 days of the week ending.
Official sources
“If my work changes because of my child's treatment, would unemployment pay me, and what would I need to show? Does this fit us, and can you help me look at leave first?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand leave and income options before relying on unemployment payments.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Ask for leave before resigning. If work ends, file at once and name the exception.
Your social worker
The social worker can write what the treatment schedule demands.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The state unemployment programme.
- Ask HR
- “Before I resign, can I take leave instead? I need to know what leave is available and whether the health plan continues.”
How to apply
First step: Ask the employer in writing for leave before resigning. If work ends anyway, file at once and name the family-health quit exception.
- Ask the employer for leave in writing before resigning.
- If work ends anyway, file straight away and name the family-health quit exception.
- Say plainly which hours you could still work.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: File as soon as work ends and name the family-health quit exception.
What to gather
- Your last pay stubs
- The written leave request and the answer
- The treatment schedule
How long: One waiting week in a new benefit year; the programme does not publish a decision time.
What a yes looks like
A weekly payment set between $54 and $370 with a balance figure.
What a no looks like, and the next move
A refusal on the quit or on availability. Appeal by the date on the notice and say which hours you can work.
Watch out
- The exception covers the quit only; each week you still have to be able and available for work.
- The total is the smaller of 26 times the weekly rate or 40% of your base-period wages.
- Ask for leave before resigning: leave keeps the job and the health plan.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Between $54 and $370 a week, with a published quit exception when a family member's health left no reasonable alternative.
- $54/week — Minimum weekly rate needed to qualify
- $370/week — Maximum weekly rate
- $26 — Balance ceiling as a multiple of the weekly rate, or 40% of base-period wages, whichever is smaller
- $1 — Waiting weeks in a new benefit year
Legal protection: A published quit exception where an immediate family member's health left no reasonable alternative · Partial benefits are possible when an employer reduces hours
What it costs the family: None.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Quit
- an exception where the health of an immediate family member left no reasonable alternative but to quit
- Weekly tests
- able and available for work each week
- Amount
- $54 minimum to $370 maximum weekly
- Balance
- the smaller of 26 times the weekly rate or 40% of base-period wages
- Waiting
- one waiting week in a new benefit year
The trap: The exception is about the quit, not about the whole claim. A parent who is at the hospital all day and cannot take work still has the availability test to meet each week, so say plainly what hours you could work.
