What it is

A subsidy toward approved child care for eligible families.

Child care for brothers and sisters can become harder during treatment. Wisconsin Shares pays part of the cost while a parent works or studies and income is under the entry line. Being at the hospital is not on the list, so ask the agency before you rely on it.

Eligibility rules
  • Entry uses 200% of poverty from February 1, 2026. Monthly limits: 2 people $3,607; 3 $4,553; 4 $5,500; 5 $6,447; 6 $7,393.
  • Continuing eligibility uses 85% of state median income. Monthly limits: 2 people $5,932; 3 $7,327; 4 $8,723; 5 $10,119; 6 $11,514.

  • A subsidy toward approved child care, with a family copayment.
  • A higher income limit for families already receiving the subsidy.

Good to know

A parent has to be working or studying. Being at the hospital does not count on its own.

Other details
  • The local subsidy agency determines eligibility and the copayment. The oncology social worker can describe the parent's hospital schedule.
  • Sitting with your child in hospital does not count as work, but a family already getting the subsidy can ask for a temporary break, and there are disability and two-parent exceptions; ask the agency by name.
