Wyoming program

Help with child care costs for siblings

Wyoming helps eligible families pay for child care when their household meets work, study or other activity rules.

What it is

Wyoming helps eligible families pay for child care when their household meets work, study or other activity rules.

A child in treatment can leave you juggling care for other children too. Wyoming pays part of the cost while the parents work or study and income is under the line; being at the hospital is not on the list. A family already getting it keeps it through a temporary break in work.

Who this can help
  • Qualifying activities include employment, self-employment, education with satisfactory progress, training, cash-assistance activities and an initial job search.
  • In a two-parent assistance unit, both adults ordinarily must meet the activity test for the same care hours unless an exception applies. Existing cases have separate temporary-loss protections. A three-month job-search provision is different from protection for the remainder of a benefit period.
  • DFS uses its current child-care financial criteria, effective April 1, 2026, and decides which household income counts. Its age rule covers birth through 13, with specified court-supervision or medically verified self-care exceptions for an older child. An existing case may keep eligibility during a qualifying temporary activity loss, but the office must distinguish that protection from time-limited job search and the rules at renewal.
What you get
  • Help paying for child care for other children at home.
  • Continued eligibility for an existing case during a qualifying temporary break.
What the help includes
  • The subsidy helps with child care costs while the parent meets program conditions.
  • DFS authorizes care hours and pays an eligible provider under its payment limits; it does not simply pay a parent cash. Licensed and some legally exempt arrangements may qualify after registration and required checks. The family may owe its assessed share and charges above the allowed payment, so the office and provider need to confirm the hours, copayment and any remaining bill.
  • Care is ordinarily limited to 16 hours a day, with specified overnight work or travel exceptions. DFS confirms the current financial table, family share and payment limit before the care arrangement is agreed.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask Family Services about child care assistance, or about the temporary-loss rule if you have an open case.
  2. Have ready: your case number, proof of work or study and the other children's ages.
  3. Ask how to report a work change and how it affects the current benefit period.

After you ask
  • Family Services can explain whether the case continues for the remainder of its current benefit period.
  • DFS ordinarily has a 30-day decision process. A licensing-related process may extend to 60 days. The benefit period generally lasts at least 12 months. Under the September 2026 reporting rule, required changes must be reported within 10 calendar days after you learn of them. DFS separately checks temporary-break protection, the 85% state-median-income boundary and any graduated phase-out at renewal.
Good to know

Being at the hospital is not a qualifying activity by itself. Starting a new case differs from protecting an existing one.

Other details
  • Reporting a work change and asking about continued eligibility can happen together. The temporary-loss rule does not mean a change should go unreported.
Ask your social worker

“Could child care help cover our other children, or protect help we already have if work pauses? Could you explain the costs and rules and help us talk with the office?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand how the other children can be cared for while treatment changes our schedule.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Report required changes within 10 calendar days and ask about protection for an existing case.

Your social worker

The social worker can ask the office what the rule means for your case.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
Wyoming Department of Family Services.
Ask the agency
“I already have child care help and I am stopping work to be at the hospital. Does the temporary-loss rule keep my case open for the benefit period?”

How to apply

First step: Discuss the activity change and temporary-loss protection with the office; report required changes within 10 calendar days.

  1. If activity changes, report required changes within 10 calendar days and ask how temporary-loss protection applies.
  2. Ask what the current income chart is, because it could not be read online.
  3. Ask whether any activity you still do counts.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply through the state's benefits system, and ask specifically about the temporary-loss rule if you already have a case.

What to gather

  • Your current case number, if any
  • Proof of work or study
  • The other children's ages

How long: Ordinary decisions: 30 days; up to 60 when provider licensing is needed. Benefit periods last at least 12 months.

What a yes looks like

The case stays open for the rest of the benefit period.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Usually the activity rule. Ask what would reopen it and when.

Watch out

  • Being at the hospital is not a qualifying activity on its own.
  • Temporary-loss protection does not remove the 10-calendar-day reporting requirement.
  • The current income chart could not be read, so ask the office for the figure.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Help with child care costs for a working or studying parent. An existing case carries on through a temporary break in that activity.

Covers: Help with the cost of child care for the other children at home

Legal protection: An existing case continues for the rest of the benefit period when the qualifying activity is temporarily lost

What it costs the family: The current April 1, 2026 financial schedule is publicly linked, but its income and copayment cells were not verified in the review. The office confirms the family share and authorized hours.

The eligibility facts, as published

Activity
Qualifying work, self-employment, study, training, cash-assistance activity or initial job search. When two required adults share the home, both generally need a qualifying activity during the requested care hours; exceptions require agency review.
Temporary loss
An existing recipient can continue during a qualifying temporary loss for the benefit period. Required changes must be reported within 10 calendar days; renewal and new-case rules remain separate.
Income
Current financial schedule and case-specific calculation, including $200 monthly earned-income disregard per working adult; table cells require confirmation.

The trap: Hospital attendance is not a qualifying activity on its own. If you already have a case, that is the thing to protect; do not report a stop as the end of the case without asking what the temporary-loss rule means for you.
