Grocery money each month
SNAP puts money for groceries on a card each month for households that meet its rules.
What it is
SNAP puts money for groceries on a card each month for households that meet its rules.
Less pay and the cost of being away at treatment can make groceries harder to cover. SNAP first checks income and then works out a benefit using household expenses. Households with an elderly or qualifying disabled member have a different income test.
Eligibility rules
- The ordinary gross screen is 130% of poverty. Households with an elderly or qualifying disabled member use the net-income test. Traditional categorical eligibility through qualifying cash assistance or SSI can also change the test; cancer alone does not establish SNAP disability status.
- Through September 30, 2026, the monthly gross line is $2,888 for three people and $3,483 for four. From October 1, the figures are $2,960 and $3,575.
- Vehicles used for transportation do not count toward the asset test.
What you get
- Monthly grocery money on a benefits card.
- Benefits within seven calendar days when the urgent-processing rules fit.
Coverage and costs
- For a qualifying disabled household member, medical costs above $35 can bring a $175 standard medical deduction.
- The payment depends on the income and deductions the office accepts, rather than equaling the income limit.
- The three-person net-income limits are $2,221 monthly through September 30, 2026 and $2,277 from October 1, 2026. A net-income test is different from the gross-income screening figure shown above.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the Department of Family Services office for help with a SNAP application through the state benefits system.
- Have current income, bank balances, rent or mortgage and utility costs ready. Tell the worker if income and available money cannot cover rent and utilities.

After you apply
- Expedited SNAP has three alternative tests: gross monthly income below $150 with no more than $100 in liquid resources; income plus liquid resources below rent or mortgage and utilities; or a qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household with no more than $100 in liquid resources.
- For an existing case, the date of a change report and supporting proof matter to the review. A pay reduction does not guarantee a higher payment; the office recalculates the accepted income and deductions.
- A decision is due within 30 days, or seven days on the urgent route. If you already get SNAP, report the pay change rather than applying again.
Good to know
A household with an elderly or disabled member skips the first screen, and a $175 medical deduction lowers the income counted. Your child's cancer alone does not count; SSI does.
Other details
- A change in pay can be reported by phone, in person, email, writing or the change form.
“Could SNAP help with groceries after our pay changes? Would medical costs change the calculation, and could you help us apply if it would be useful?”
Why I’m asking: Food still needs to be paid for while treatment changes our work and household costs.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply, report this month's income, and report a drop within the month it happens.
Your social worker
The social worker can help file and can ask for urgent processing.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- Wyoming Department of Family Services.
- Ask the agency
- “We have almost no income this month. Does my household qualify for the seven-day urgent processing, and can I have the medical deduction?”
How to apply
First step: Apply through the state's benefits system this week and say plainly what is coming in this month.
- Apply this week and say plainly if there is almost nothing coming in, so the seven-day rule applies.
- Ask for the standard medical deduction once a disability is recognised.
- If a parent's pay drops, report it by the last day of the month and get the proof in within ten days.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Apply through the state's benefits system, and report a drop in pay by phone, in person, by email, in writing or on the change form.
What to gather
- This month's pay for everyone in the household
- Rent or mortgage and utility costs
- What is in the bank today
How long: Seven calendar days in an urgent case. Otherwise the ordinary state standard applies.
What a yes looks like
A card and a monthly amount.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Usually income. Reapply the month a parent's pay drops.
Watch out
- The figures change on October 1 each year, and Wyoming publishes both tables at once.
- Medical costs above $35 bring a $175 deduction once a disability is recognised. Ask for it.
- A drop in pay has to be reported by the last day of the month for the rise to reach the next one.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Grocery money each month. The gross income test for four people is $3,483 through September 2026 and $3,575 from October 1.
- $3,483/month — Household of 4, gross income test through September 30, 2026
- $3,575/month — Household of 4, gross income test from October 1, 2026
- $2,888/month — Household of 3, gross income test through September 30, 2026
- $175/month — Standard medical deduction for a household member with a disability
- $35/month — Medical costs above which that deduction applies
- $7 — Calendar days within which benefits must be available in an urgent case
Covers: Monthly grocery money on a card · Urgent processing within seven days for the lowest-income households
What it costs the family: None.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- gross monthly income at or under 130 percent of the poverty line for the assistance unit size
- Net test
- a unit with an elderly or disabled member is tested on net income instead
- Assets
- vehicles used for transport do not count
- Expedited
- within seven calendar days for very low income and liquid assets, or where income plus liquid assets fall short of rent and utilities
The trap: Medical costs count. Once someone in the household has a disability, a standard deduction of $175 applies to medical costs above $35, which lowers the income the state counts. Ask for it by name.
