Famous Fone Friends connects seriously ill hospitalized or home-bound children ages 4–18 with participating celebrities through telephone calls, audio or personal video messages, and live chats. After the connection, the child may receive a mailed television script or a character-related memento for a non-reader. A doctor, child-life specialist, social worker, or another member of the child’s medical team must submit the public referral; parents cannot self-refer under the published route. The program is free to families and hospitals and accepts referrals from the United States and Canada. Each child may connect only once with a particular celebrity but may receive connections from different participants, subject to availability and capacity that are not published.
