Pennies From Heaven Pittsburgh is a volunteer-run fund created after its founders' son was hospitalized with acute lymphocytic leukemia. It helps families experiencing financial hardship when any child—not only a child with cancer—is admitted to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Hospital social workers may distribute immediate transportation, food, sibling-care, overnight-supply, lunch, gift-card, or hospital-living help and can escalate larger requests involving lost wages, utilities, mortgage payments, or another need that lets a parent remain at the hospital. Families do not use a public application; they tell their assigned hospital social worker about the need. Amounts, repeat rules, current funding, and the payment method for larger bills are not published.
