Friends of Karen supports families of a newborn through age 21 who is actively receiving treatment for cancer or another life-threatening illness and who meets its citizenship and 12-month pre-diagnosis residence rules in specified New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut localities. A hospital social worker usually refers the family, followed by a required private telephone intake. Separate services include whole-family social work, sibling and school support, bereavement care, and seasonal or milestone assistance. The organization publishes English and Spanish intake numbers but keeps its application private.
